By Snowbird Living· October 23, 2026· Southwest Florida

Discover 10 surprising facts about Ave Maria, Florida, including its founding, famous church, Michelangelo connection, and fascinating local history.
Think you know Ave Maria? From a town that began in tomato fields to a church featuring marble from Michelangelo's quarry, there's more to this Southwest Florida community than meets the eye.
There's something special about Ave Maria, Florida.
Maybe it's the beautiful church overlooking Annunciation Circle, the familiar faces around Town Center, or the way a quick trip for coffee can turn into a conversation with three different neighbors.
But beneath the charm of our little corner of paradise is a fascinating story. And even if you've lived here for years, there might be a few things that surprise you.
At Snowbird Living, we love discovering the history, people, and places that make Ave Maria unique.
So, how well do you really know our town?
Here are 10 things you probably didn't know about Ave Maria, Florida.
1. Ave Maria's Story Almost Stayed in Michigan
Before there was an Ave Maria, Florida, there was Ave Maria College in Michigan.
Tom Monaghan, the founder of Domino's Pizza, had a dream of establishing a Catholic university rooted in faith and academic excellence.
The original college was located near Ypsilanti, Michigan, with plans to expand onto property near Ann Arbor.
But when the necessary zoning approvals didn't materialize, Monaghan began looking elsewhere.
That search eventually brought him to Southwest Florida, where a partnership with Barron Collier Companies would lead to something much bigger than a university.
An entirely new town.
Just imagine how different Ave Maria's story might have been!
2. Our Town Was Built on Tomato Fields
Before the neighborhoods, golf carts, restaurants, and Town Center, there were fields.
Lots of fields.
The land that became Ave Maria included tomato farms, cattle pastures, orange groves, and sod farms.
In 2005, the ambitious project began taking shape, transforming agricultural land in eastern Collier County into a new university town.
If you've ever wondered what this area looked like before the homes and businesses arrived, picture miles of farmland stretching toward the horizon.
It's pretty remarkable how much has changed in just two decades.
3. Ave Maria's First Resident Arrived on June 30, 2007
Every town has to start somewhere.
For Ave Maria, one important milestone came on June 30, 2007, when its first resident moved in.
Think about that for a moment.
No established neighborhoods filled with families. No bustling Town Center. No years of community traditions.
Just a new town beginning to come to life.
Ave Maria officially opened in July 2007, and those early residents helped establish the foundations of the community we enjoy today.
If you were among the first families to call Ave Maria home, we'd love to hear your story!
4. Our Church Has a Connection to Michelangelo
Here's one that might surprise you.
The breathtaking Annunciation sculpture on the front of Ave Maria Catholic Church was created using Carrara marble from Cava Michelangelo in Italy.
Yes, the very same historic quarry used by Renaissance master Michelangelo.
Created by sculptor Márton Váró, the approximately 30-foot-tall artwork depicts the Annunciation, when the Archangel Gabriel appeared to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The sculpture was unveiled on March 25, 2011, the Feast of the Annunciation.
The project took nearly three years and used approximately 120 tons of marble.
Next time you're walking through Annunciation Circle, take a moment to look up.
It's easy to become accustomed to something beautiful when we see it every day. But this really is an extraordinary piece of art right here in Ave Maria.
5. Ave Maria Catholic Church Wasn't Always a Parish
For many residents, Ave Maria Catholic Church is the heart of town.
But did you know it wasn't originally established as a parish church?
The building began as the Ave Maria Oratory and was dedicated in March 2008 by Bishop Frank J. Dewane of the Diocese of Venice.
For years, it served as a quasi-parish.
That changed on January 19, 2017, when the Diocese of Venice purchased the oratory from Ave Maria University and officially established Ave Maria Catholic Church as a parish.
A significant moment in the history of our growing Catholic community.
6. There's a Museum Dedicated to Mother Teresa Right Here in Town
You don't have to travel far to discover an extraordinary piece of Catholic history.
Located on the Ave Maria University campus, the Mother Teresa Museum tells the story of St. Teresa of Calcutta through photographs, personal artifacts, handwritten letters, and historical exhibits.
The museum was originally dedicated in February 2014 and opened to the public that March.
Today, its approximately 3,000-square-foot exhibit space includes more than 30 informational panels and a recreation of the simple room where Mother Teresa lived.
It's one of those special places that even some longtime residents may not have visited.
And it's right here in our own backyard.
7. Ave Maria's First Town Center Business Was a Coffee Shop
Before today's restaurants, shops, and gathering places, there was The Bean of Ave Maria.
The coffee shop became the first business to open in Town Center, serving its first cup in December 2007.
There's something fitting about that, isn't there?
A brand-new town, and one of the first places people could gather was over a cup of coffee.
Because building a community isn't just about constructing homes and roads.
It's about creating places where neighbors become friends.
8. Thousands of Acres Around Ave Maria Have Been Preserved
When people think about Ave Maria, they often picture the church, neighborhoods, and Town Center.
But there's another important part of our story.
Nature.
According to Ave Maria Development, approximately 17,000 acres in and around the community have been preserved through regional land stewardship efforts.
Those conservation lands help protect the natural character of eastern Collier County.
With wetlands, wildlife, and the Everglades nearby, it's a reminder that our little town sits in one of Florida's most remarkable natural regions.
Sometimes paradise is right outside our back door.
9. Ave Maria Was Designed Around Its Church
Have you ever noticed how the church seems to anchor everything around Town Center?
That's no accident.
Ave Maria was designed with a traditional town layout, placing the church prominently at the center of community life.
Annunciation Circle, the surrounding shops, public spaces, and nearby university were all part of a larger vision for a walkable community.
Rather than building another conventional suburban development, the founders wanted a place where education, faith, family, and everyday life could come together.
It's one of the things that makes Ave Maria feel a little different from many other communities in Southwest Florida.
10. Ave Maria University Was Here Before the Town
Here's an interesting way to look at our history.
The university actually came before the town.
Ave Maria University began operating in temporary facilities in Naples in 2003, four years before the town officially opened.
Construction on the permanent campus and surrounding community began in 2005.
By the start of the 2007–2008 academic year, students were attending classes at the new Ave Maria campus.
So, in many ways, the town grew around the university rather than the university being added to an existing town.
It's a pretty unusual beginning for a Florida community.
