If you love aviation history, military aircraft, roaring jet engines, and discovering exciting things to do in Southwest Florida, the Florida International Air Show in Punta Gorda deserves a spot on your calendar! On November 7–8, 2026, the skies over Punta Gorda Airport will come alive with spectacular aerial performances, historic aircraft, and the kind of excitement that brings out the kid in all of us. And for snowbirds, retirees, veterans, aviation enthusiasts, and grandparents looking for a memorable outing with the family, this is exactly the kind of experience that makes spending the season in Southwest Florida so special. Here at Snowbird Living, we're always looking for experiences that go beyond the usual beaches, golf courses, and restaurants. Don't get us wrong, we love those too! But sometimes it's nice to discover something a little different. And there's certainly nothing ordinary about watching a historic fighter jet roar across the Florida sky! A Childhood Memory I'm Looking Forward to Reliving This year's Florida International Air Show will be particularly special for me. Believe it or not, this will be our very first time attending the Florida International Air Show in Punta Gorda! The last time I attended an air show, I was just a young boy, probably around seven years old. That was quite a few years ago! I still remember the excitement of looking up at the sky, watching those incredible aircraft fly overhead, and hearing the unmistakable roar of their engines. There's something about an air show that stays with you. Maybe it's the sheer power of the aircraft. Maybe it's watching a pilot perform a maneuver that seems to defy gravity. Or perhaps it's simply that feeling of being a little kid again, completely amazed by what's happening above you. And that's something I think many of our snowbird readers can appreciate. We all have those childhood memories that never quite leave us. For some, it's watching airplanes take off from a nearby airport. For others, it's remembering the aircraft their fathers or grandfathers talked about, or perhaps even the planes they flew, maintained, or served alongside during their military careers. And for many aviation enthusiasts, the fascination with flight has simply never gone away. That's one of the wonderful things about an air show. You can be seven years old or seventy-seven years old, and the excitement is still there! Now, all these years later, I'm looking forward to experiencing that feeling again, this time with my own family. And maybe one day, my children will look back and remember their first air show just as fondly as I remember mine. For Those Who Love Military and Aviation History One of the things that makes the Florida International Air Show particularly appealing is the opportunity to experience aviation history up close. For anyone who grew up during the golden age of aviation, served in the military, worked in the aviation industry, or simply loves historic aircraft, there's something truly remarkable about seeing these machines in flight. These aren't just airplanes. They're pieces of history. The 2026 event is scheduled to feature two particularly interesting military aircraft. MiG-17: A Cold War Fighter Jet The MiG-17 is one of the most recognizable Soviet-designed fighter aircraft of the Cold War. For those who remember the Cold War era or followed military aviation during the Vietnam War, this aircraft represents a fascinating chapter in aviation history. Its distinctive swept wings and powerful jet engine make it an impressive sight. And seeing one flying overhead is quite different from seeing one sitting in a museum! TA-4J Skyhawk: A Naval Aviation Classic The TA-4J Skyhawk is another aircraft aviation enthusiasts will appreciate. Developed from the legendary Douglas A-4 Skyhawk, this two-seat jet trainer represents an important part of American naval aviation history. The Skyhawk served with the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, and earlier A-4 variants were even flown by the famous Blue Angels demonstration team. For veterans and anyone with an interest in American military aviation, seeing a Skyhawk take to the sky is a special opportunity. It's a chance to reconnect with a remarkable era of aviation and perhaps share a few memories along the way. Aircraft appearances and performers are subject to change. The Thrill of the Air Show Of course, you don't have to be an aviation historian to appreciate an air show! Sometimes you just want to see something spectacular. The Florida International Air Show brings together talented pilots who demonstrate incredible precision, skill, and control. From high-speed passes to breathtaking aerobatic maneuvers, there's plenty to keep everyone looking skyward. Scheduled performers for 2026 include aerobatic pilots Aarron Deliu and Kevin Coleman, Franklin's Flying Circus, and the Chuters Jump Team. Imagine sitting back in your lawn chair on a beautiful November afternoon, enjoying the Florida sunshine, when suddenly the sound of a jet engine fills the air. Now that's a pretty exciting way to spend a weekend in paradise! A Wonderful Outing With the Grandchildren For our snowbirds who have children or grandchildren visiting, this is an experience worth considering. Let's face it, finding activities that entertain several generations isn't always easy. But airplanes have a wonderful way of capturing everyone's attention. Grandparents can appreciate the history and engineering, parents can enjoy the performances, and children can experience the excitement of seeing incredible aircraft up close. The air show also offers family-oriented attractions, including aircraft displays, a children's fun zone, and STEM activities designed to introduce younger visitors to science, technology, engineering, and aviation. And who knows? Perhaps a visit to the air show will inspire a future pilot or engineer. Or perhaps it will simply become one of those family memories everyone talks about for years to come. Either way, that's a pretty good reason to go! Honoring America's Aviation Heritage As America celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2026, events like the Florida International Air Show offer a wonderful opportunity to reflect on our country's aviation achievements and military heritage. For generations, American aviators have pushed the boundaries of flight, from the earliest pioneers to the remarkable men and women who serve in our armed forces today. The air show is also expected to feature a military enlistment ceremony during Saturday's opening program, recognizing young Americans preparing to begin their service. For veterans and military families attending, it's another meaningful part of the weekend. And for those who simply appreciate the courage, innovation, and dedication behind aviation, there's plenty to admire. Make It a Southwest Florida Day Trip One of the great things about being a snowbird in Southwest Florida is having so many wonderful destinations within reach. Punta Gorda is a great example. If you're staying in Naples, Ave Maria, Fort Myers, Cape Coral, or the surrounding communities, the air show makes for an exciting day trip. And why not make a full day of it? After enjoying the air show, consider exploring Punta Gorda's charming waterfront, visiting its downtown shops, or enjoying dinner at one of the area's restaurants. That's what we love about exploring Southwest Florida. You can discover something new, enjoy a memorable experience, and still have time to take in a little of the local charm. Rediscover That Childhood Wonder One of the things I love most about living in Southwest Florida is that there's always another adventure waiting to be discovered. And sometimes, those adventures remind us of experiences we haven't thought about in years. For me, attending the Florida International Air Show will be a chance to revisit a childhood memory that has stayed with me since I was about seven years old. For others, it might bring back memories of military service, working around aircraft, watching the Blue Angels, or attending air shows with their own parents decades ago. And for some, it might be their very first air show. That's what makes an event like this so special. It brings generations together through a shared sense of excitement, curiosity, and wonder. Because you're never too old to look up at the sky and feel like a kid again. We'll be attending the Florida International Air Show in Punta Gorda for the first time this November, and we can't wait to share the experience.
