Snowbird Living's 12 Favorite Christmas Movies: Holiday Classics, Family Memories & a Little Christmas Magic
There's something special about Christmas movies. They make us laugh, bring back childhood memories, and sometimes remind us of the people we love and miss. Whether you're spending Christmas in Southwest Florida or welcoming children and grandchildren for the holidays, these are 12 Christmas movies that hold a special place in our hearts.
We might not have snow falling outside our windows here in paradise, but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy a White Christmas on television!
Some of these movies have been family favorites for generations. Others are newer discoveries we've enjoyed with the grandchildren. And a few have become especially meaningful because of the memories attached to them.
So grab some popcorn, pour yourself a cup of hot cocoa, and join us as we share some of our favorite Christmas movies!
1. It's a Wonderful Life (1946)
There's a reason this movie remains one of the greatest Christmas classics of all time.
George Bailey's unforgettable story reminds us that a person's greatest accomplishments aren't always measured by wealth or success, but by the lives they've touched along the way.
It's a beautiful celebration of family, friendship, sacrifice, and community.
And living in a place like Ave Maria, where neighbors become friends and people look out for one another, that message feels especially meaningful.
After all, it really is a wonderful life!
2. A Christmas Carol (1984)
There have been countless adaptations of Charles Dickens' beloved Christmas story, but for us, George C. Scott's portrayal of Ebenezer Scrooge is something special.
The Victorian atmosphere, the wonderful performances, and Scott's unforgettable transformation make this one of our favorite versions.
It's a powerful reminder that it's never too late to change, forgive, show generosity, and rediscover the joy of Christmas.
And who doesn't love watching Scrooge finally discover the Christmas spirit?
3. White Christmas (1954)
Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, beautiful music, and a little old-fashioned Hollywood magic. What's not to love?
Of course, who could forget the iconic “Sisters” performance? It's one of those wonderfully charming scenes that never fails to make us smile.
But there's another musical moment in White Christmas that holds a particularly special place in my heart.
“We'll Follow the Old Man.”
I remember singing that song to my dad on his last birthday before he passed away.
It's a memory I'll always treasure.
Funny how a song from a Christmas movie can become so much more than just a song. It can bring us right back to a moment, a person, or a memory we wish we could experience just one more time.
That's part of the beauty of these old films.
They connect generations, and sometimes they help us feel a little closer to the people we miss.
For me, White Christmas will always be more than just a Christmas movie.
4. The Shop Around the Corner (1940)
If you love classic Hollywood romance, this one's a gem!
James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan star in this charming story about two coworkers who unknowingly fall in love through anonymous letters.
Set in a little shop in Budapest, the film captures the warmth, humor, and romance of another era.
It's a wonderful reminder that sometimes love is much closer than we realize.
And there's something about those old black-and-white films that makes Christmas feel especially nostalgic.
5. Arthur Christmas (2011)
Here's a Christmas movie we discovered more recently while watching with the grandchildren, and what a delightful surprise!
Arthur Christmas tells the story of Santa's youngest son, Arthur, who discovers that one little girl's Christmas present has accidentally been forgotten.
While everyone else seems ready to move on, Arthur is determined to make things right.
What follows is a wonderfully imaginative adventure filled with humor, heart, and Christmas magic.
We love how the film captures the excitement of Christmas through a child's eyes while reminding us that every child matters.
If you haven't seen this one, especially with the grandchildren, we'd definitely recommend adding it to your Christmas movie list!
6. Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992)
Who doesn't love Kevin McCallister taking on New York City?
From the Plaza Hotel to the beautiful Christmas decorations of Manhattan, Home Alone 2 is packed with holiday nostalgia and plenty of laughs.
But there's one part of this movie that feels particularly relatable to those of us celebrating Christmas in Southwest Florida.
Remember the McCallister family arriving in Miami?
Instead of the snowy Christmas they might have imagined, they find themselves in a hotel, surrounded by rain, watching It's a Wonderful Life on television.
Well, here we are celebrating Christmas in paradise ourselves!
Thankfully, Southwest Florida usually offers a little more sunshine than the McCallisters experienced on their holiday getaway.
Let's just hope the rain stays away this Christmas!
And if it doesn't, at least we know there's always a good Christmas movie to watch.
7. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989)
Ah, the Griswolds!
If you've ever hosted Christmas dinner, decorated the house, or tried to create the perfect family Christmas, you'll understand why Clark Griswold belongs on this list.
But for me, some of my favorite Christmas memories aren't necessarily about the movie itself. They're about sitting together as a family, watching everyone laugh at the same ridiculous scenes we've seen a hundred times.
And then there's the quoting!
It seems like everyone in the family has a favorite line from Christmas Vacation, and somehow those quotes always find their way into our conversations throughout the Christmas season.
Sometimes we're laughing so hard at each other that we're barely paying attention to the movie!
That's what makes this one so special to me. It's not just the Griswolds or their unforgettable Christmas disasters. It's the memories of being together, laughing as a family, and sharing traditions that never seem to get old.
Because sometimes the best part of a Christmas movie isn't what's happening on the screen. It's the people sitting beside you.
8. Miracle on 34th Street (1947)
There's something timeless about Edmund Gwenn's portrayal of Kris Kringle.
This beautiful Christmas classic is filled with warmth, kindness, and a little holiday wonder.
It's one of those movies that reminds us of the excitement we felt as children waiting for Christmas morning.
And sometimes, it's nice to revisit that feeling, even if we're watching with our own grandchildren now.
9. Joyeux Noël (2005)
This is one of the more serious films on our list, but it's also one of the most meaningful.
Inspired by the remarkable Christmas Truce of 1914 during World War I, Joyeux Noël tells the story of soldiers on opposing sides who briefly set aside their differences to celebrate Christmas together.
It's a moving reminder of our shared humanity, the longing for peace, and the extraordinary power of Christmas to bring people together.
A beautiful film that reminds us that even in the darkest circumstances, moments of hope and compassion can shine through.
10. Elf (2003)
Buddy the Elf!
Need we say more?
Will Ferrell brings so much energy and enthusiasm to this modern Christmas favorite.
From his adventures in New York City to his endless excitement about everything Christmas, Buddy reminds us that sometimes we could all use a little more childlike joy in our lives.
And let's face it, who hasn't wanted to answer the phone with a little Christmas cheer after watching this movie?
11. The Polar Express (2004)
Few Christmas movies capture the wonder of the season through a child's eyes quite like The Polar Express.
There's something magical about the idea of boarding a train on Christmas Eve and setting off on an unforgettable journey.
The excitement, the music, the adventure, and the sense of wonder make this a wonderful film to enjoy with children and grandchildren.
And here's a little Southwest Florida connection!
Did you know we have our own memorable train experiences right here in the region?
The Sugar Express in Clewiston, Florida, offers a chance to experience the nostalgia of historic passenger train travel.
While it isn't the Polar Express, there's something about the sound of a train whistle, the excitement of climbing aboard, and watching the scenery pass by that brings a little of that same magic to life.
It's the kind of adventure that can create wonderful memories with the grandchildren.
And that's what we love most about The Polar Express.
It reminds us that Christmas is especially magical when experienced through the eyes of a child.
You can discover more about the Sugar Express and other Southwest Florida attractions on Snowbird.club.
12. The Santa Clause (1994)
Tim Allen stars as Scott Calvin, an ordinary dad who suddenly finds himself becoming Santa Claus.
What starts as a hilarious Christmas mishap turns into a heartwarming story about family, responsibility, and rediscovering the magic of the season.
It's one of those movies that brings back memories of watching Christmas films with the family, and it's just as enjoyable to share with the next generation.
Sometimes the best Christmas traditions are the ones we pass along.
Christmas Movies, Family Traditions, and Memories That Last
The older I get, the more I realize that Christmas movies aren't just about entertainment.
They're about memories.
They're about watching the same films year after year, laughing at the same scenes, singing along to familiar songs, and sharing traditions with the people we love.
Sometimes they're about remembering those who are no longer with us.
Other times they're about discovering something new with the grandchildren and watching the magic of Christmas come alive all over again.
Whether you're enjoying Christmas in Ave Maria, Naples, or somewhere else in Southwest Florida, there's something comforting about gathering together for a good Christmas movie.
And while we might not have snow outside, we have plenty of Christmas spirit here in paradise!
